Statement of intent - In my seminar I’m going to talk about how important feminism is and enlightening my audience about how women s rights are being suppressed. Feminism by definition is the advocacy of women s rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes, and being an advocate of feminism means you believe in equality. But recently I’ve seen that feminism has gotten a negative connotation saying feminism is anti-men and isolating. Feminists are looked down upon as our opinions seem too strong or aggressive. Because of this some you sitting there are choosing not to identify as a feminist or are anti-feminist. But saying you are anti-feminist means you are insulting every woman who was forcibly restrained in a jail cell with a†¦show more content†¦We were told to carry our keys like a weapon. We were told close friends might rape us if they’ve had a bit too much to drink because they’re men, that it’s wrong, but it happens sometimes and we should be on our guard. Society teaches girls to shame, close your legs, cover yourself. Making us feel as though our clothes say more about our consent than our mouths do. This fixation on our clothing feels demeaning because it feels as though our worth as a human being is based on what we wear. Girls are treated this way and this often makes us feel trapped. Our bodies are so sexualized that if we show a sliver of skin we will instantly be frowned upon or whistled at. In schools around the world, there are strict dress codes girls have to dress by. When a girl is interrupted during school to force her to change clothes or to send her home because her shorts are too short, or her bra straps are visible this is revealing to her that covering her body is more essential than her education. This is telling her that ensuring boys have a distraction-free learning environment is more significant than her education. This is telling her that boys are more entitled to an education than she is. We are taught to feel as though being born with a vagina in this world is already a weakness. It makes us prey. The Santiagos have been involved in politics in nearby Bohol, the ancestral home. They had been pioneering industrialists in the plywood business. Don Jose had been an early advocate of local processing of lumber as opposed to the shipping of log abroad. VISTAWOOD, the trademark chosen for their plywood, was one of the first export plywood production in the Philippines. Late in the fall of 1960, at a time when the plant was operating at capacity, working three shifts a day, some representatives of a national labor organization gained the allegiance of a large group of workers to establish a union at VISTAWOOD. Over the period of several months, the union activists who were assigned to the logging concessions left the company at their own initiative. These events marked the end of any organized activity at VISTAWOOD. As a matter of general policy, management preferred to hire people from Bohol and even tolerate some irregularities due to this peculiar working arrangement, than to risk another confrontation with formal union organizations. In fact, Don Jose soon began to rely on political leverage this group of workers afforded him in his election campaigns in Bohol. Late in 1967, VISTAWOOD was facing serious production problems. Rated capacity and management profit goals had not been attained for several years. Fierce competition in the export market and decreasing selling prices, coupled with new duties being levied by importing countries had aggravated the situation. It was apparent to management that the only source of improvement would have to be the production function. Costs of operating the plant had been steadily rising without no accompanying rise in production volume. Mr. Antonio Garcia was brought to VISTAWOOD Superintendent in the hope that he could bring some improvements in the plywood plant. Discovering the absentee rate of the plant, Mr. Garcia began to examine this and other related problems at VISTAWOOD. It became increasingly clear that: (1) production was low and highly erratic and (2) one of the main causes of this gloomy situation was the unstable and unreliable workforce. The absentee rates fluctuated between 50% during Monday and Saturday nights and 30% during the rest of the week. Daily production was so adversely affected by this shifting workforce, that Sundays had to be regarded as regular work days but with higher labor costs. Mr. Garcia was convinced that the plant could be run on a six-day schedule and meets the rated capacity if an adequate workforce could be maintained in the ratio of 3:2. Decision Framework Constraints Given the problematic framework on situation described, Mr. Garcia now had to decide what to do with the problem on the imported workers from Bohol. The fluctuating absentee rates of these employees has resulted to serious problems such as the unstable, unreliable and inadequate workforce unable to meet the rated capacity at the plant and resulted to low and highly erratic roduction. Rated capacity and management profit goals had not been attained for several years. Aside from the fierce competition in the export market, decreasing selling prices, and rising production costs, imported workers from Bohol have created greater problems. Increasing the production volume through having an adequate stable workforce is the only solution to the problems faced by the company. And that would mean to fire those workers from Bohol who have absentee problems. These people create greater inefficiencies for the company. However, this will risk the company to face formal union organizations. And these would mean putting the company in bad public image ore reputation. Retaining the employees from Bohol will protect the company’s reputation but the absentee rates of these employees affect production costs and volume. And if not addressed will result to financial ruin for the company. Mr. Garcia is therefore caught in a seemingly difficult dilemma and has to formulate a decision which would both safeguard stability and profitability at the company and at the same time, protect the reputation of the company. DECISION ALTERNATIVES The following choices are open to Mr. Garcia: 1. Fine the employees from Bohol who have absentee problems but spell ruin on the company’s reputation; or 2. Retain the employees from Bohol but creates problems on the production costs and volume and eventually spell financial ruin to the company. RECOMMENDATION The first alternative to fine employees from Bohol is preferable given the following considerations: 1. It will decrease absentee rates of employees and having a stable and reliable workforce will result in meeting the rated capacity and volume of the plant. 2. It will dissociate political expediency from management decisions. 3. Mr. Garcia could talk to the workforce from Bohol to avoid establishing a union at VISTAWOOD. CONCLUSION Firing the workers from Bohol will address production problems of the company and insure the long-run stability and profitability of VISTAWOOD. There was a pause, her tone was worrying. Its your grandfather, hes passed away. I was stunned: the grandfather who had always been there for me was no longer there. I could feel someone grinding their fist through my stomach; the pain was unbearable. For the first time ever I was lost for words. Tears started to form in my eyes. I could not contain my emotion. All my memories of my grandfather seemed to rush through my head as I sat in my room isolated from the rest of the world. I had been asked to write a speech for the funeral; it seemed a daunting task at first but as my emotions took over, i found I was able to express exactly what I was feeling. The speech read: My grandfather was a man of few words who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: a bet on the horses and the odd bit of chocolate. In addition, I would have the ability to come and go as I pleased. Simply, by acknowledging that I had that piece of paper, I would feel more responsible and adult-like. Beginning the process in obtaining my permit should not have been so confusing. Knowing that in order to receive a permit I had to pass a written exam, a few nights before the written exam portion I would set roughly an hour to review my booklet and study. Because of that, I felt as if I knew what to expect, little did I know what would occur the day of my written test. The day started off smooth, I had an appointment at the Department of Motor Vehicles at eleven in the morning, hermetically when you have an appointment it makes reason for visit faster. The DMS is typically filled with individuals that Just want to get things done and depart, and then there are the individuals that cause our day to be longer. When I departed from home at nine thirty in the morning and got to the building, I immediately saw how the line wrapped around it. There were so many different types of persons filling up the line standing under the early-mid day sun. Luckily, it was during the fall season so the sun was not beaming as hard as it would during the summer. As I got dropped off, I had my booklet in hand and headed towards the line. I stood in line with the tremendous amount of people for about two hours until I had realized that my appointment time had come and gone as I continued to wait and study. Soon after I decided to walk away from the non-advancing line and ask the security guard at the door what was going on. He then continued to tell me that there systems had to decide to take a little vacation and they were working on the problem. As my day progressed I continued to wait, the line began to become smaller as people began to apart. Soon after, I found myself in a very brief conversation with a very grimy male standing in front of me. This chap was telling me that he was here to take his driving permit written exam also. I asked him what his opinion was on everything that was response, he responded, l dont care for chit-chat, I Just want to get this and be done. I felt the same way as him but I did not speak in that manner. Finally the DMS security guard walked out of the building and announced that the system was up and running and they would do the best to make up for the time lose. As individuals n line began to enter and exit the building it was finally my turn to enter, pick up a ticket number, and wait some more. After waiting for roughly one more hour, my ticket number was called I went up to the service window. The woman behind the window asked me what I needed help with and I told her that I wanted to take my driving permit test. She then handed me an exam and directed me towards the test taking area. While approaching the test taking area I accidentally bumped into the rude chap that was in front of me in line. He had an anxious look on his face, as if he id not know how to respond the questions. I began to get nervous when I saw his facial expressions and body language before I had even glanced at the exam. I got to my area and placed my test on the hard, cold, wooden surface I then began by reading the first question. To my amaze, the questions were so simple at that moment my anxiety was all gone. I breezed through the questions reading each one carefully and answering it with the best choice. When I was finally done with my exam, I gathered my things and went back to the window. I handed the woman my est. then began to get more anxious as I saw the womans red pen move back and forth. In my mind, I kept thinking she was marking all of the questions as wrong. She was finally done correcting my exam then continued on and called me up by name, as I approached her window I maintained eye contact with her, her facial expression went from dim and dull to cheerful and perky. She handed me back my test and said with delight in her voice, congratulations, you passed. I felt so content to have passed my driving permit exam and finally receive my official driving permit.
